The first issue to be mindful of is consistency. When you house a puppy, like most of us, repletion and constant action is the key. It's oh so easy to let standards slip, but if allowed to do so, the rot sets in and the task is uphill from there on as a long-term problem is established.
The most popular, and highly effective method of training a puppy is to use 'crate training'. Simply put, this involves either the use of a crate, or a sectioned off area of the room which becomes the puppy's sleeping area. This creates a boundary for the puppy, and since an animal will never mess in their own sleeping area, this teaches the puppy the first rule of boundaries.
Next it essential to show your puppy where it should use as a toilet. Take it to the area, and this is particularly important if the puppy is sleeping a lot. If the puppy has not shown any inclination to go to the toilet, pick it up and take it there. Assist your Puppy into establishing a toilet routine so that it soon becomes the norm for the puppy to go to this area when nature calls. This is particularly important at night before going to bed to encourage your puppy to use the toilet before bedding down for the night. After a while this will become second nature.
Establish a routine in all of the daily activities for your puppy. Try to keep to regular feeding times, exercise times, play times and toileting times. This will all help to create order for the puppy which will become the patterns it will keep to as it grows into an adult dog.
